This site is intended to provide information for wonderful parents with terrific children about microtia and aural atresia.
Care for both microtia and atresia are provided at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences. Jaw care, if necessary, is provided in conjunction with our adjacent institution, Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Microtia means “little ear.” Microtia ears can vary in appearance; most microtia ears are shaped like a small “peanut” or “figure-of-eight” and are associated with aural atresia (aural atresia means that the ear canal has not opened).
Some microtia ears have a more recognizable auricular appearance and the ear canal might be open (see surgical examples).
